Chinese Firms Hold Stakes in Over 25% of African Ports
Chinese state-owned enterprises have expanded their influence across Africa through approximately 78 stakeholders in 231 commercial ports, representing a quarter of the entire African continent. Their participation ranges from construction and financing to operations management. It is worth noting that West Africa has nearly half of China’s affiliated ports, including important projects such as the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Nigeria, where Chinese companies play an important role. This broad participation exceeds China’s port participation in other regions, such as Latin America and the Caribbean, which have ten ports built or operated by China, and Asia, with 24. In addition to economic interests, this strategic positioning makes it possible for China to establish maritime and military operations, thereby enhancing its Earth-occupation throughout Africa.
