Mark Ross convicted of murder after trial at Leeds Crown Court

A thief killed an Amazon delivery driver who tried to stop his van from being stolen. Sentenced to life imprisonment.

Claudiu Carol-Kondor, 42, died after reaching a speed of 60 mph (96 km/h) on a residential street in Leeds on August 20.

Ross claimed at the Leeds Crown Court trial that he did not know Mr. Condor from Sheffield had been hung in a van after stealing the van, but he was convicted of a jury.

The judge sentenced the 32-year-old Armley, who said he would be in office for at least 30 years.

In the victim’s impact statement, Condor’s fiancé Mariana George said: “My broken heart is still waiting for him to walk into the house.”

She said: “Claudiu worked hard and dreamed of buying his own van. He finally did it three weeks before he was killed.

“Our relationship is a beautiful relationship. He is a person of integrity and hard work.

“He loves his job and always wants to do his best.”

The couple lived in Sheffield together, but added that she has since returned to her native Romania.

In her statement, she described that the meaning of her life has changed since Kondor’s murder.

“The plan has completely disappeared, the desire to wake up in the morning has disappeared, and the feeling of being able to walk safely on the street has disappeared.

“The dream of getting married and living a quiet life in England has died.

“Loneliness forced me to return to Romania with a sad heart.”

Shout for help

The juror heard that Mr. Codor used his own bus to deliver packages in the Amley area, which he collected from an Amazon warehouse.

The court heard that Ross lived nearby when he was away from the vehicle, went out to buy marijuana, climbed into the driver’s seat and started driving the van away.

Mr. Kondor tried to stop him by opening the front passenger door of the van and trying to climb in.

The court was told how Ross made a quick turn from one side to the other and made an inappropriate turn before hitting two parked cars, all to “get rid of” Mr. Kondor as he hung on a van from an open passenger door.

Witnesses described Mr. Kodor’s legs dragging the ground on the ground as he clasped his legs against the open door, and a woman said she heard him shouting.

Mr. Condor died of head and chest injuries in the second crash, the court heard.

Ross denied the murder but was convicted on Wednesday with a 10-1 verdict.

Justice Goss said: “Claudiu-Carol Kondor must feel fear for the last 45 seconds of his life because you ignored his pleas faster, drove faster, dragging him along the road, causing his mental and physical pain.”
