US Sidelines South Africa’s Ambassador Amid Political Fallout

South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, appears to be frozen in Washington, failing to secure a key meeting with State Department officials and leading Republicans. Rasool, who held the same position in the Obama administration, may be shut down due to his pro-Palestine stance and past criticism of Trump. His suffering comes as Pretoria tries to make tense connections with the Donald Trump-led administration. Relations between the two countries have become worse since Trump was re-elected to the White House. In February, he suspended aid to South Africa due to a controversial land law, claiming to target white land owners in the country. Trump is also skeptical of the country’s position in Israel. Pretoria is now considering alternatives, including recalling Rasool.
