Patrick Dorgu: Man Utd wing-back tells referee he was wrong to award penalty
This is an extraordinary display of sportsmanship.
As Manchester United led the Europa League 2-1 that night, with Real Sociedad last 16 times, totaling 3-2, the Red Devils were sentenced to a fine.
It was their third kick of the night, when referee Benoit Bastien felt Patrick Dorgu be knocked down by Hamari Traore.
However, when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) checked the challenge, Dorgu chose to overturn the decision himself.
The 20-year-old can be seen gesturing to the referee, believing it was not a foul – VAR agreed and revoked the fine.
Manchester United still enters the quarterfinals with two scores Progress 5-2 in general, But it’s still an impressive honest move by Dorgu.
“It’s a good thing,” said co-owner Ruben Amorim. “I’m proud of him. I can’t say it’s 0-0 or (we) have the same response, we’re losing.”
Football is a highly dynamic and competitive game, but there have been many events in the past and sportsmanship overcomes the desire to win at any cost.
The BBC Sport has looked at some of the best examples from the past here.
