Julian Alvarez: The double-kick penalty controversy in shootout between Atletico Madrid & Real

Athletic coach Simeone expressed doubts about the decision but hoped the officials made the right call.

“The referee said when Julian reached the penalty spot, he touched the ball with his standing foot, but the ball did not move,” he said.

“I’ve never seen the penalty they called VAR, but, they’ll see him touch it. I want to believe they saw him touch it.

“Did you see him touch the ball twice? Please, who is in the stadium, see him touch the ball twice, the ball moves, please stand up and raise your hand. I can’t see anyone raising his hand, that’s all I have to say…the next question.”

But Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was satisfied and made the right decision.

He added: “They found it. When we realized there was a question, they had found it on VAR.”

“I saw it, I think he touched it with his left foot, the second time.”

Real Madrid goalkeeper Caltois accepted the misfortune of the athletic, but the rules mean it was correct.

He told uefa.com: “I think something happened, so we said it directly to the referee and then was confirmed to have a double touch and it was not included, so obviously gave us an advantage.

“(Alvarez) slipped and he touched the ball twice, which was a missed free throw. You can’t touch the ball twice. It’s unfortunate luck, but it’s the rule.”

Former Newcastle and Ireland goalkeeper Shay said during the BBC match that day: “Sometimes you’ll see it happening when the ball kicks the other foot out and then goes in a completely different direction.

“Here, the ball didn’t really change direction, but (Alvarez) did kick the ball away from his (right) foot. The law of the game is clear.”
