UK helped Ukraine and US reach ceasefire agreement
British government sources said the UK was “closely involved” to help Ukraine and the United States reach an agreement on a ceasefire agreement with Russia.
Ukrainian President Zelensky says he is ready to accept an immediate ceasefire However, after Saudi Arabia held talks, the United States must convince Russia to agree.
The BBC was told that over the past week, European efforts led by Sir Keir Starmer have brought the United States and Ukraine to support each other.
Sir Kyle praised the “outstanding breakthrough” and called it “an important moment of peace in Ukraine.”
Last week, the Prime Minister’s national security adviser Jonathan Powell worked with his U.S. counterpart Mike Waltz and German and French officials to develop a plan for the ceasefire and possible subsequent steps, British sources said.
Last weekend, Powell went to Kiev to meet with Zelensky and helped draft a written proposal that included temporary pauses to fight and then confidence-building measures such as exchange of prisoners of war, return of Ukrainian children captured by Russia, and the release of civilians.
Ukrainians and Americans agreed to the proposal, laying the foundation for what happened in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia’s negotiations are the first time since Extraordinary showdown at the Oval Office.
In a joint statement Tuesday, the Trump administration announced it would resume military aid to Ukraine and restart intelligence sharing with Kiev – a sudden stop after their rankings.
Following talks between the White House and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, Sir Kiel congratulated the two men, adding that “we all need to redouble our efforts now” to ensure a peace agreement in Ukraine.
“As the delegations of the United States and Ukraine said, this ball is now in the Russian court. Russia must now agree to a ceasefire and the end of the battle,” he said.
Trump told reporters that U.S. officials will discuss the deal with Moscow on Tuesday or Wednesday because he wants to “put the show on the road.”
On Saturday, Sir Kyle will receive a call from the leader, which he calls a “coalition of willingness” to discuss peacekeeping efforts aimed at blocking Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Those who joined the call were “prepared to end the war in a just and permanent way so that Ukraine could enjoy its freedom”, he said.
The purpose of the European team working behind the scenes is to ensure that it is now the spotlight for Russia: does it want peace?
A British source said: “The ball is firmly in the Russian court. Will they go back and forth and stop fighting in order to have serious negotiations on lasting peace, or will they continue to massacre innocent civilians?”
It is believed that thousands, most of them were killed or injured on both sides, and millions of Ukrainian civilians have fled refugees since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago.
