Man Utd to build ‘iconic’ £2bn 100,000-capacity stadium close to Old Trafford
Manchester United currently has £1 billion in debt and has not yet said how they intend to pay for the stadium.
It will be part of a wider regeneration of the Old Trafford region, which is expected to be the largest UK project since the 2012 London Olympics accompanied the Stratford region’s transformation. Prime Minister Rachel Reeves has provided support to the government.
Manchester United said the entire project has the potential to create 92,000 new jobs, which will involve the construction of 17,000 households and bring another 1.8 million visitors to the region each year. They added that the value of the project would provide an additional £7.3 billion for the UK economy.
“Today is the beginning of an exciting journey to reach the greatest stadium in the world,” Ratcliffe said.
“Our current stadium has served us well over the past 115 years, but it lags behind the arena of the world’s sports.
“I think we’ll likely end the world’s most iconic football field.”
The stadium will be built using prefabricated prefabricated and transport 160 components along the nearby Manchester Ship Canal.
