Urban-Think Tank Empower Develops Sustainable Housing in South Africa’s Khayelitsha

Urban-Ink Tank Tank Empower, a nonprofit organization, has completed transformative developments in the South African township of Khayelitsha, demonstrating a new approach to informal settlement construction. Located in the BT-Soweto area of site C, the project offers 72 terraced homes for 428 residents, as well as public places, community centers and playgrounds. The Empower upgrade model focuses on creating community-centric sustainable solutions while addressing the limitations of traditional low-cost housing projects. The development aims to provide an economically and ecologically viable model for the continued growth of townships like Khayelitsha, which has historically been influenced by apartheid policies.
