I Can’t Wait for New York’s Interdimensional Meow Wolf Arcade
With 80s video games on your phone, you can spread news through typical news. But this is my wolf to you. In a small pixel game, it looks like the old arcade game Double Dragon, the gang and the police are coming. But if you survive, you’ll find the actual information: Meow Wolf, a bizarre immersive multimedia collective Make a real-world art playgroundis expanding to New York City. It’s a weird way to get the message out, but I’m excited – because I live in New Jersey, I’ve always hoped that Meow Wolf would go east for years. However, we all have to wait – maybe until 2028, although Meow Wolf hasn’t specified any specific opening dates yet.
Aside from psychedelics and fascinating ways, I discovered Meow Wolf’s former location, and it looks like New York’s South Street Seaport website will push the territory of things I’ve learned in depth: video games, mixed reality and tech levels that will blend virtual and physical ways in an AR-ASPRITAINAL way, but still not reaching the dream.
Meow wolfif you’ve never been, is a huge series of art installations mixed with interactive games and secrets. Imagine if you no longer sleep, there will be a supernova in an escape room, which will turn into a trans-dimensional carnival. Each Meow Wolf location has a different theme, and so far the destinations are located in the west: Las Vegas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Los Angeles for a year or two or two. New York is the first Oriental Meow Wolf, which will be decorated with technology.
“The major markets like Los Angeles and New York, they’ve always been on our radar; they’ve always been our dream,” Vince Kadlubek, founder and chief visual officer of Meow Wolf, told me on the phone. New York locations will focus on video games and arcades Buds at other Meow Wolf locationsand involved in the weird arcade space. When I visited Meow Wolf’s Grapevine in Texas in 2023, a weird little arcade room – full of playable art games – is one of my favorite places to wander. I can’t imagine that more and more explosions in this space could be multiple rooms and multiple rooms and multiple stories. The location of Meow Wolf isn’t really anything specific – local artists recruit different ideas in each location, so expect a lot of unexpected ideas – but if the game is a big part of this idea, I’ll really like it.
Plotzo was created as a mascot for Meow Wolf’s early arcade experiments, as explained by Benji Geary, co-founder and senior artistic director of Meow Wolf. But the New York Space will be Plotzo’s headquarters because “like where Homeboy really lives or lives,” he called Plotzo’s appearance “this crazy plague, like it’s spread throughout the Multiverse in all these iterations.”
It will also be a big experience – according to Kadlubek, the relative square footage will be on the experience level of the Omega Fair and Denver Fusion Station in Las Vegas, which feels big and imitative. The Fusion Station in Denver is 90,000 square feet: These places are filled with mysteries of digging, and you may miss the little secrets of the first (or fifth).
The location of Meow Wolf already feels like melting reality (see here, a room at the Denver Fusion Station). But the wall between the real and the virtual may bleed further.
Mixed reality playground?
Meow Wolf appears to be using the location in New York to further what Kadlubek calls a true “mixed reality” vision, a time when the company plays in all its forms. Meow wolf put it Your own VR Minigolf course experience And the reality phone application has been enhanced. However, different levels of virtual to reality interconnects look like where New York is finally open, probably in late 2027 or early 2028.
“The New York project will drive the boundaries between the exhibition itself and the experience outside the exhibition wall – by far the most ambitious project we have ever tried,” Kadlubek said. “The opportunity to create a truly mixed reality ecosystem – now we have always dreamed of it.”
It’s hard to say what this means, but according to Kadlubek, it might involve holographic display technology, connections to beacons and specific attractions, and AR or even VR on the phone.
kadlubek mentioned Magic Leap’s headquarters in 2018I also visited a space, which is an early sign of how hope is for the fusion of real and virtual. Magic Leap’s vision for AR was ultimately flawed, but the fusion of Willy Wonka’s ideas and interactions sounds like an area that inspires the team.
This is still a bit of a leap, the team admits. “I can tell you now that what we long to do in New York is impossible to even do today,” said Jose Tolosa, CEO of Meow Wolf, who is also a New York resident.
Trippy Art Arcade game already lives in the location of Meow Wolf; it’s the real illusion of Texas Vines.
Video games, real-life bleeding and mobile phone mix
Development of the New York project has just begun, and how Meow Wolf develops the nature of its location has used many local artists who help to bending the space into something improvised by the internal team. In this sense, this still sounds like a mystery, even for the crying wolf.
Meow Wolf’s phone app has some weird stuff buried, and it will be a big part of it. “There are a lot of plans on how the app is centered,” Tolosa said. “It will be connective tissue.” Meow Wolf is already using the app to explore location-based task prototypes and it sounds like the deeper part that is coming. Some Meow Wolf places have used tap-in to log in to the screen hidden around the space.
Meow Wolf can also dabble in publishing its own video games, implied by the playable teasing of the New York announcement and acknowledged by CEO Tolosa and founders Kadlubek and Geary. Meow wolf has already Work with VR Minigolf Game developers’ powerful coconut and indie game scenes seem to be the perfect match for exploration (my recent game addiction, UFO 50already felt like something crawling out of a crying wolf, Panic Date).
But video games that live in physical space and even outside can push the whole thing to territory reminiscent of Args, an genre of real-world interactive games, all over the place and media, and often feel like an alternative plane of reality – a genre Meow Wolf has been played to some extent.
“The main medium for storytelling is video games now. Considering how it extends to IRL, if you move the video game out of the couch and away from your smartphone and connect it to that video game,” Kadlubek said of the goal of the entire experience.
This is already a trend in theme parks: Super Nintendo World, which is opening an extended version in Orlando A new epic universe The theme park will explore some of these ideas later this spring through wearable bands and physical interactions with the environment. You can hit the block and do things. Disney’s Star Wars: The Edge of the Galaxy There are also some games connected to the phone. Disney hopes to successfully get the life video game creativity of Star Wars-themed hotel experience Known as the Galaxy starcruiser.
Meow Wolf’s claims may become stranger and more interesting. “We think they are a type of scratching surfaces. When you have dedicated interior spaces, you are much more likely than when you are on the land of an outdoor theme park. We are really honing what we are now when you have a fixed interior space to achieve this mixed reality experience.” Geary talked to me about his obsession with the graphic style of the Sega Dreamcast or Katamari Damacy. Other crying wolf positions already have a lot of games, and they are very sliding and weird.
I was impressed by the fact that Meow Wolf’s previous location managed to mix the chaotic feeling overload, interactive tasks, photo manipulation and chill zones together, seemingly allowing myself and everyone else to do everything at their own level without being disturbed by others. But, Meow Wolf Ar glasses Can’t arrive yet? This happened in the art experience and I can’t wait to see what happened in New York.
