ECOWAS successfully concludes the 13th ECOWAS African wrestling tournament (TOLAC 2025)
The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) reaffirmed its commitment to regional integration, cultural protection and gender inclusion and achieved success at the successful end of the 13th ECOWAS African Wrestling Championships (TOLAC 2025). The grand closing ceremony held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on 8 March 2025 marks the historical moment of the 50th anniversary celebration of Ecowas, emphasizing the power of sport to enhance unity among member states. Tolac’s Tolac conclusions on March 8, 2025 further highlight ECOWAS’ commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment of sports.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, praised Ecowas for the ECOWAS obtained by using sport as a tool for solidarity and development, on behalf of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He praised Senegal for being the overall champion, Nigeria finished second and Benin ranked third. He stressed that traditional wrestling is not only a sport, but a fundamental aspect of African heritage, symbolizing resilience and discipline. “~ In the days of the past, we have witnessed not only fierce competition, but healthy competition. More importantly, we have seen a true proof of the skills, strength and rich cultural heritage that binds us as a region.
The decisive moment of Torak 2025 is the first time that the historicity of female wrestlers is incorporated into the competition, highlighting the American dollar’s strong commitment to gender equality and social progress. The program is in line with Ecowas’ broader vision of ensuring equal opportunities for sports and others. The conclusions of the competition on International Women’s Day cemented the importance of this achievement, which shows that tradition and inclusion can flourish together under the leadership of Ecowas.
Francis Chuks Njoaguani, Director of the Center for Youth and Sports Development at ECOWAS, delivered his closing speech on behalf of Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs at ECOWAS, highlighting the transformative role of Ecowas in promoting traditional sports. He stressed that wrestling is not only a competitive discipline, but also a unified force, which enhances Ecowas’ regional cooperation, the core values of culture
Communication and social cohesion. ” ~ In the days of the past, we have witnessed not only fierce competition, but healthy competition. More importantly, we have seen a true testament to the skills, strength and rich cultural heritage that binds us as a region.
The match brought an exciting performance, with Senegal crowning the entire Cham-Pion team, followed by Nigeria, Benin and Guinea. In the women’s category, Ebipatei Lienbofa (Ni-Geria) and Ebi Bigos (Nigeria) won the weight classes of 66 kg and 76 kg, respectively. Among the men’s divisions, Sinni Semien (Senegal), Senegal (Senegal) and Ngani Senegal (Senegal) were obtained in categories of 86 kg, 100 kg and 120 kg. These outstanding performances demonstrate the tremendous talent of the Ecowas region, thus enhancing the role of the organization in fostering excellence movement.
In addition to competition, Tolac 2025 is a powerful diplomatic platform that promotes dialogue, regional cooperation and peacebuilding. The tournament provides opportunities for athletes, officials and stakeholders to discuss the role of sports in economic development, empowerment of youth and cultural diplomacy. National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade stressed the economic potential of traditional wrestling and called on government and private sectors to make greater investments to ensure that Athle-TES and sports professionals can build sustainable careers while preserving Africa’s rich sports heritage.
As Ecowas celebrates its golden jubilee, the success of Tolac 2025 proves the organization’s enduring vision for a united, prosperous and inclusive West Africa. Dr. Omar Alieu Douray, Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee, reiterated Ecowas’ commitment to supporting traditional sports as a tool for regional integration and social development.
