Michael Conlan: Belfast featherweight happy to get back to winning ways in ring return

Michael Conlan said he fought again after 15 months of absence when he defeated Indian fighter Asad Asif Khan in Brighton on Friday night.

The 33-year-old Belfast lightweight team lost his first two fights after returning.

Conlan beat Khan 78-74 in eight rounds under new coach Grant Smith.

“It’s comfortable, he didn’t hurt me at once. I’m just happy, getting things done and moving forward,” the Olympic bronze medalist said.

“It’s always important to lose back to back, the fact that you’re back finally back to the victory column, it’s always good, so I’m so happy.”

After the victory at the Brighton Arena, Conland will be followed by Spain’s Cristobal Lorent, winning the European lightweight championship.

Conlan admitted to being a little rusty in his comeback round, and he expects the fight to take place this summer.

“It’s the right battle, the right direction, and I’m happy with it.

“To be honest, it’s tricky to go back to things (oppose khan) and fight distance, timing and things. It’s not enough, but it’s coming.”
