Amen’s friends and family say he is a “kind and “smart” boy

A 14-year-old boy is involved in the death of Glasgow teenager Amen Teklay.

The 15-year-old died on the street last Wednesday after a violent incident in St George off-road in the city.

As police investigations into his murder continued, Amen’s friends held a vigil in Glasgow on Sunday.

Scottish police said Amen’s family was supported by specially trained police officers.

Det Ch Insp Campbell Jackson said: “Our idea is with Amen’s family and friends during this very difficult time.

“I also want to thank the community for their support so far.”

There was a crowd of about 40 people wearing dark clothes, and some women wearing headscarves looked quiet and gloomy.

The afternoon vigil was held at the football park where Amen played football near Scotstoun.

Jamie O’Neill, support staff member of Amen, who is connected to Kingsway Community, said the teen’s friend wanted to hold an event.

“The recent days have been a mixture of sadness and numbness, and people have shared stories of happiness when they talk about Amen,” he said.

“His young friends at school wanted to know what they could do and thought of the idea that they should hold a vigil.

“It’s their way to pay tribute to their friends, get together and support each other.”

Amen was killed in an incident on Clarendon Street, Glasgow

Scottish police say their investigation into Amen’s death is underway.

Emergency services participated in the incident at 22:30 on Wednesday at Clarendon Street, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

After London’s inspection, Scotland said his death was considered murder.

Originally from Eritrea, Amen lives in Glasgow with his father and was recently granted the UK’s “reserved rights” status.

He attended St Thomas Aquinas High School in Jordanhill.

Delina Teklay, 17, said he hopes to gain British citizenship and become a basketball player, doctor or engineer.

She told BBC Scotland News that Amen is “not just my brother, he is my best friend”.

She said he was a “very cute guy, so kind and so smart”.

Scottish police conducted a major investigation into Amen’s death.

The unit said the “answer is in the local community” and officials have been reviewing CCTV and conducting door-to-door inquiries.

Supt Christopher Stewart said: “We will continue to support Amen’s family and continue to interact with local communities affected by this incident.

“There will continue to be visible policing in the area and I urge anyone with questions or concerns to approach local officials – they are there to help.”
