European Athletics Indoor Championships: GB’s Jeremiah Azu claims 60m gold as Andrew Robertson wins bronze
Britain’s Jeremiah Azu won the men’s 60 million gold medal at the European Track and Field Championships, becoming teammate Andrew Robertson to win the bronze medal, winning his first international title.
Azu, 23, led the personal best in 6.49 seconds at 6.52, and Robertson ranked third in 6.55 in the final Saturday night.
Azu qualifies the fastest from the morning calories, making further statements by setting the European lead time in the semifinals, followed by a personal best of 6.52 seconds.
But he saved his medal match for a medal match held just two and a half hours later and won the first gold medal at Clinch GB in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve won.
“I know I’m in the right place, which confirms that I’ve made the right decision. It’s just the beginning of our team’s journey. We’ll be all in, and now I’m excited to be on this trip.”
Azu became the ninth British man to win the championship – Azu was the first since Richard Kilty won the back-to-back title in 2017.
Welshman’s victory and Robertson’s bronze medal follow the 1500m runner’s bronze medal Revee Walcott-Nolan and Hybrid 4x400m relay Quartet.
It was the first international medal for Robertson, 34, who received a late call from the team and won his fourth in 2021.
Robertson joked: “This time last week, I was peeing and I had a great time in Scarborough with my family.”
“I got a call on Wednesday to be a reserve, but I’ve been preparing for the competition because that’s my goal for a long time. Age 34, the second fastest time ever, I can’t ask for it anymore.”
