Ben Stokes considered as England white-ball captain, says Rob Key
Kiki said on Thursday at Lord’s that England would not be in a hurry to make a decision and had “a lot of options” but he believes there is more consistency between the test and 50 cricket matches than the T20 format.
Stokes may be working with other T20 captains 50 times over 50 leadership with tests.
“I believe that cricket testing cricket and 50 cricket are probably closer than the T20, which is the outlier now,” Kay said.
Keys also mention current white ball vice captain Harry Brook and limited-edition experts Phil Salt and Liam Livingstone, who have led England over the past year.
If Stokes or Brook take on leadership roles in White Ball, their workload will be taken into account, especially in England’s year against India’s home court and Australia’s Marquee Test series.
A home white ball series against the West Indies only four days after a one-time test against Zimbabwe in May, while the summer ended with a limited match against South Africa and Ireland.
England played the white ball series in New Zealand before the Ashes, and then held the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
Stokes was the guy in the game when England won 50 World Cups in 2019 and played a major role when they were crowned the T20 World Championship in 2022.
He retired from 50 cricket in the summer of 2022 and reversed his decision to play in the 2023 World Cup.
“We have to make the most of the best players,” Kay said. “We want them to play for England.
“It’s important, it will take some work because you’re also throwing franchise cricket into it.
“But I believe our players are committed to playing for England as much as possible.”
