Ilona Maher: American says ‘never say never’ on playing in the PWR again

Maher won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last summer as part of the U.S. side and joined Bristol, changing back to XVS ahead of the World Cup in August.

She said the focus of the next few months will be on continuing the game, with the U.S. Hawks facing Australia and New Zealand as part of the Pacific IV series.

“We started at the age of four in the US PAC at the age of 15, and I hope I have proved myself in this space for the roster of the US team, and I hope I will choose for that,” Maher said.

“To keep learning the game and make myself the roster of the World Cup, but also the best player I can play in the World Cup.”

Bristol head coach Dave Ward and assistant coach Tom Luke played a role in bringing Maher to England, saying she is now a “lifetime bear”.

“I’m honored to be on this team, and it’s a special plan they have here,” Maher said.

“The girls are so enthusiastic that I’m part of the team and I have to play with some of the best players in England, Wales and Scots, so it just makes me more successful in the World Cup.

“I’ll play with them – I wish I played with them, but it was amazing.”
