Chelsea and Man Utd in WSL title race after champions draw and United win
It is fair to say that few people expect United to compete in the championship battle this season and win the fifth game, with several players moving forward.
After manager Emma Hayes left, many expected Chelsea to get off from Chelsea, with Manchester City and Arsenal looking best to challenge the Bruce dynasty.
But while Bompastor’s Chelsea continues to dominate, scored points in just two games this season, United quietly enjoyed a great campaign.
WSL’s table team is currently in seven straight wins, has been beaten this semester and has only six goals in 15 games, fewer than any other aspect of the department.
Marc Skinner’s team has beaten 35 points last season and has seven games still in the game.
Former England midfielder Fara Williams told BBC Sport that he was surprised because they let it go. ”
“I probably didn’t give them the chance they might have. The pressure has recovered. All Manchester United can do is win the game they have.”
Goalkeeper Mary Earps, captain Katie Zelem and top scorer Nikita Parris were regular starters who left the club last summer, but Manchester United looked stronger.
“I was most impressed by seeing how they performed this year, how they adapted to the game and played differently,” Williams said.
“We’re very used to watching them play from behind and play in two-thirds. Sometimes we see the other side of them. They’re not shy about walking for a long time, in half of the opponent. I really like Manchester United.”
United’s defensive improvements were inspired by the performances of goalkeepers Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Captain Maya Le Tissier, returning 10 clean sheets in 15 games and forming their bid to get a spot in the Champions League next season.
“They went back to what they were good at, and that was defending,” Williams said.
“They acknowledged the least target in the WSL, which is a benchmark for them. That’s why the league was second two seasons ago.”
