How an Idaho boy’s ninth birthday wish struck an entirely different tone

Idaho Arlene’s Heart – Your birthday is once a year and can be selfish. It’s all about you, and the kids keep blessings as long as we have candles.

But for Grant Mullen of 9-year-old Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, his last birthday party was totally shocked.

Last year, Grant’s father Mark began volunteering at SNR, a recreation center for people with special needs. Shortly after he started, he also got Grant of volunteers.

“It’s very important to get your kids involved,” Mark told CBS News. “It really makes a big difference.”

When Mark asked Grant what birthday he wanted last September, he was pleasantly surprised by the answer.

“We asked him, ‘What do you want to do for your birthday? Who do you want to invite? What do you want?” Mark said, “It’s not as good as he said.” “The most perfect answer ever.”

Grant’s wish is to invite everyone at SNR to his birthday party.

“Because they weren’t invited to their birthdays,” Grant explained. “Sometimes people don’t get that much love. It’s sad.”

The SNR group got together again with the Mullen family last week. Parents told CBS News that many of their children are indeed not invited to many birthday parties. But when they mix, it’s clear that Grant is not only kind when he sends out these invitations. He really wants them here.

“They’ll be better, Kimd,” Grant said. “And they won’t be angry all the time.”

This feeling is mutual.

“He is my best friend,” said Grant’s Cade Johnson.

Sam McEnany added: “I just love him. He is my brother.”

And friends like this, need gifts.
