Hazel Dukes, New York civil rights leader, dies at 92, Sharpton says
According to a statement from Rev. Al Sharpton, the iconic civil rights leader and chairman, Dr. Hazel Dukes, has passed away.
She is 92 years old.
“I feel sad for hearing the death of my true friend, sister and friend for over 40 years, Hazel Dukes. She is a force of justice and a radical in the highest order. She makes a difference. We will always respect. I will talk to her by phone two days ago. Two days ago, we will be two days ago. We will never have a Habel Dukes again, but I said a country and we had a friendly action on Saturday.

Dukes was born and raised in Alabama, then made history in New York, becoming the first black American to work in the Nassau County Attorney’s Office.
