Angie Stone, veteran R&B singer-songwriter, dead in car crash
Her daughter said Grammy-nominated R&B artist Angie Stone died after a 63-year-old car accident.
“My mom is gone,” her daughter Diamond Stone wrote in a Facebook post.
A van was overturned in Alabama earlier Saturday after one of her vans was on the show, according to media reports.
The artist lagged behind songs like No Rain (in this Cloud) and hoped I didn’t miss you, earning three Grammy nominations in her career. She has been a member of the female hip-hop trio since the 1970s.
The band’s most popular song, Funk You Up, hit 15 peaks on Billboard’s Hot Soul single.
Her daughter is also a musician and goes under the nickname Ladi Diamond, saying on Facebook that she is “numb”. A few hours ago, she asked for prayers for her family and said she was on the way.
A spokesman for the artist told the BBC that her family went to Montgomery, Alabama and planned to release more information as soon as possible.
Guy Todd Williams, known as Rahiem among the hip-hop group master flash and angry five, said about nine passengers were in a van with stone at the time of the crash.
“She was originally a member of the legendary rap group sequence, leaving an indelible mark in the music industry,” Williams said.
He said she was the only death in the crash.
The BBC has contacted police in Montgomery for details.
With her musical career, Stone also achieved some success in the film.
She debuted in The Hot Chick with Rob Schneider, Rachel McAdams and Anna Faris.
She also starred in Battle Temptation with Cuban Gooding Jr and Beyonce in 2003.
