Champions Trophy 2025: Five issues facing England after Jos Buttler’s resignation

This is a long-term problem with British cricket.

White teams struggled as England focused on the testing side. When they prioritize people with color kits, the red ball side tends to cause a crisis of censorship.

That Buttler rarely has his best player to be warned that should be side by side with the championship record, which reads a championship and three regrets to exit.

McCullum’s first inning as the white ball leader was to bring both sides closer. Smith, Ben Duckett, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are all limited opportunities. The result cannot be considered successful.

England has only participated in 10 tests this year and played 17 times in 2024, and McCallum doesn’t sound ready to change.

“Most other teams can handle this, and if you look at the players in India and how they play across formats, look at the fast bowling lineup in Australia, which is similar to New Zealand,” he said.

“I hope, with some savvy planning and a better understanding of what our players’ pool looks like, we will be able to make sure we can cross all formats because that is ultimately what people who follow this team deserve.”
