Ramaphosa Champions Multilateralism at G20 Amid US Absences

At the Cape Town G20 Financial Summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the “erosion of multilateralism” as a serious threat to global growth and stability. In his speech, he stressed that a solid rule-based command is crucial in a context of heightened geopolitical tensions. In addition, Ramaphosa calls for innovative financing and insurance solutions to combat climate-induced disasters in vulnerable countries. His remarks were contrary to the notable absence of U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after U.S. Secretary of State rejected similar incidents. Rubio’s decision to skip the summit was a response to his alleged “anti-Americanism” of Pretoria.
