Gene Hackman and wife’s deaths “suspicious enough in nature” to investigate, search warrant says

Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found dead Wednesday afternoon at her home outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday afternoon, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said. One of their dogs was also found dead.
Deputies responded to the house after receiving a call from maintenance workers on 911 phone, and they found the door to the house. Delegates showed no signs of forced entry, and no house was flipped.
They found Hackman and Arakawa in different rooms – in a noticeably muddy room, in the Arakawa in the bathroom. The arrest warrant says their bodies showed signs of decomposition, indicating that they may have been dead for some time before they were discovered.
Deputies also said they found a space heater near Arakawa and found an open prescription bottle and pills on the counter near her.
The warrant says the late dog was a German shepherd and was found in the bathroom closet where Alakava was found.
“Deputies observed a healthy dog running on the property, another healthy dog near the female of the deceased, and a late dog lying 10-15 feet in the closet in the bathroom,” it said.
The warrant also said, “there is no obvious sign of gas leakage.”
Santa Fe City Fire Department responds to possible tests Carbon monoxide The arrest warrant said the leak, but no signs of the leak were found. The New Mexico gas company also responded, finding no signs or evidence of problems with the pipeline inside and around the house.
The sheriff’s department said an investigation is underway and the cause of death will be determined by medical examiners.
Hackman has been a two-time Oscar winner and has appeared in dozens of films including “French Connection”, “Dialogue”, “Unforgiven” and “Superman”.
His daughters Elizabeth and Leslie Hackman and granddaughter Annie Hackman issued a statement Thursday confirming the deaths of him and Arakawa.
Their statement said: “We are very sad to announce the death of our father Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy. His outstanding acting career is loved and admired by millionaires, but for us, he is always just dad and grandpa. We will miss him so much and be shocked by this loss,” their statement said.
