A UK-US trade deal could happen ‘very quickly’, says Donald Trump
ReutersDonald Trump said in a joint press conference with Sir Keir Starmer that a trade deal between the United States and the United Kingdom could be “quickly.”
Trump said during the Prime Minister’s visit to the White House that “a real trade deal” could see that Britain could avoid the president’s continued threatening tariffs on its trading partners.
Sir Kyle said the two countries will begin to involve a new economic agreement that will focus on the potential of artificial intelligence.
“We didn’t overregulate these new technologies, but instead seized the opportunity they provided,” he said.
Trump repeatedly threatens to impose tariffs on many allies – import taxes, including 25% of goods made in the EU. He also ordered a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminum entering the United States – which could hit the UK.
Asked if Sir Kyle tried to dissuade the president from ordering tariffs on Britain, Trump said: “He tried.”
“He’s working hard, I’ll tell you. He’s won whatever they’re paying over there.
“I think that among these two great, friendly countries, I think we will most likely make a real trade deal with one.
To convince the president to convince Britain’s tariffs, Sir Kyle said that U.S. trade relations were “fair, balanced and reciprocal.”
Since leaving the EU, consecutive British leaders have hoped to reach a trade deal with the United States.
During his first term as president, Trump said he was talking about a “very substantial” trade deal with the UK.
