Champions Trophy 2025: Jos Buttler says he will ‘take some time’ to consider future as England white-ball captain

England’s final match against South Africa’s championship trophy on Saturday. After that, their next white ball mission is a three-game home series against the West Indies, which begins on May 29.

They have lost ODI (34) since winning the World Cup in 2019 (29). Under Buttler, he replaced World Cup champion Chief Eoin Morgan in 2021 and won the T20 World Cup in 2022, where they won 14 of 38 ODIs.

Brendon McCullum replaced Matthew Mott as head coach at the beginning of the year and supported Buttler as captain, which showed that the captain could bring “the best years” to England.

But England allowed Afghanistan to score 325-7 after they lost to Australia in the opening game, and then failed to chase the target despite Joe Root’s 120.

After Root, the next highest score was 38 made by Buttler and Ben Duckett, but England still only needed 14 balls and three wickets were delayed.

“A more confident and confident team will cross here,” Butler added.

“We have opportunities, it depends on us as individuals and as a team to find ways to get ourselves back where we need to.

“Joe Root played a typical Joe Root inning full of class, roles, calmness and skill, and we need someone to stay with him for a longer time.”

When asked about his bat form – buttler has only two ODIs for half a century since September 2023 – the captain said: “If I knew, I wouldn’t play myself the way I did. I wouldn’t feel it was disappointing when you didn’t reach the best level in the world.”
