World Open: Judd Trump’s title defence ended by Joe O’Connor
Defending champion Judd Trump suffered a surprise loss in the last 32 strokes of the World Open, losing 5-2 to Joe O’Connor of China’s Youshan.
On Monday, the world’s No. 1 Trump (35) defeated China’s Chang Zehuang 5-1 but was unable to replicate the form with his British compatriot O’Connor.
O’Connor, 29, recorded five and a half centuries and hit 113 people to complete his victory.
“I’m so happy to be against the best players in the world,” O’Connor told the World Snooker Tour.
“Luckily for me it was my day. There is no reason why I can’t keep winning it.”
Kyren Wilson beat Zhou Yuelong 5-4, meaning the eighth seed Shaun Murphy was the highest ranked player, heading to the last 16.
Murphy beat Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-nooh 5-0 with a 5-0 victory and will face China’s Ding Junhui after the ninth seed 5-3.
