Ex-archbishop George Carey among clergy facing possible disciplinary action
The Church of England declared that the former Archbishop of George Carey of Canterbury was one of the clergy who failed to maintain, a report from the Church of England.
The list also includes former bishops Durham Paul Butler and Rev Andrew Cornes, who attended Charles’ coronation, who is currently in a panel discussion and is responsible for selecting the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
Smyth died in 2018 and used horrible violence to attack the boy at his Winchester home, where he met his abuse in the 1970s and 1980s at Christian summer camps.
The report led to Justin Welby’s final resignation as the Archbishop of Canterbury in November.
The church’s National Protection Group said that due to the “ongoing process”, the other two clergy have not yet reviewed their actions.
It added that almost 30 other clergy criticized in the report would not face disciplinary action because “there is not enough evidence to meet the threshold of disciplinary litigation.”
A long-awaited report on Smyth’s abuse, the Makin Review, was released last year and concluded that he was considered the most prolific serial abuser associated with the Church of England.
Mr. Welby apologized to the victim and said Smith’s abuse “manipulated Christian truths to justify his evil behavior”, and Welby’s then-archbishop published the findings.
However, the review concluded that if Welby formally reported the charges to police in 2013, Smyth might have been brought to justice.
Since 2013, Mr. Welby has refused to call on his response to the case. He eventually said he had to bear “personal and institutional responsibilities” And resigned last year.
Lord Carey was also appointed in the Makin Review, which derives the abuse Smyth has drawn decades of suffering, and everyone in the church knew that it was not taking action.
Lord Carey resigned as pastor in December After investigation into separate cases of sexual abuse in the Church of England.
