Tributes Pour in for Champion of African Cinema

The groundbreaking Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé died in Bamako 84, Mali. He was a pioneer in African cinemas, becoming the first black African filmmaker to win a jury award at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. His career spans over 50 years, including important works such as Den Muso (1975) and O KA (2015). Cissé’s film explores African culture, social issues and magical realism and has won praise worldwide. His legacy also includes Carrosse d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, cementing his position in film history. His death came shortly after his press conference before the 29th fespaco in Burkina Faso.
