John Oliver loves performing stand-up most

Although Oliver’s HBO show is now in season 12, he hasn’t lost contact with the stand-up comedy that started his career. Oliver told Whitaker that the performance was his “favorite place” when he was preparing for the backstage show at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
In the video above, Oliver explains why it helps comedians performing gigs that are not so popular with audiences.
“It’s good for you. Bombing is the key, the key part of standing up,” Oliver said. “You learn more from failure than you learn from success. Sometimes, struggling in the show and learning lessons from it,” he said. There will be real excitement. Failure is the hell of the mentor.”
