Ballet Academy in Lagos Gives Children Confidence and New Opportunities

In a failed district in Lagos, Daniel Ajala has established a ballet school, the Leap Academy of Dance Academy, which provides local children with opportunities to learn ballet despite limited resources. The purpose of self-taught dancer Ajala is to show that even in communities with lower average incomes, everyone can enter ballet. The academy operates in an open backyard where kids practice shooting and leaping in their daily lives. Through dance, Ajala helps these children build self-confidence and teaches them to “stand up, speak out and defend themselves.” Photographer Vincent Boisot captures poignant moments of children’s journey, including their care for the ballet.
