Uncertainty Surrounds AGOA’s Future Amid Trump’s Trade Policies

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), a scope of responsibility granted to the U.S. markets of eligible African countries, expires on September 30, 2025. President Donald Trump’s re-doubt of free trade, and the recent re-authorization of the bill is problematic with tensions in South Africa’s land reform policy. Analysts point out that although AGOA has little overall impact on Africa’s GDP, certain industries, such as South Africa’s automotive industry and garment manufacturing in countries such as Kenya, rely heavily on its benefits. The potential failure of AGOA to reposition could undermine these sectors, leading to significant economic consequences on the mainland.
