Man seriously injured in stabbing at Berlin Holocaust memorial
A 30-year-old child A person was seriously injured in an attack on a knife near the Berlin Holocaust Memorial.
Police said the incident occurred at 18:00 local time (17:00 GMT).
The victim – a Spanish tourist – was taken to the hospital for surgery after maintaining an upper body injury that was not life-threatening.
Police arrested a male suspect, a 19-year-old refugee from Syria, reported by German media.
Officials have not identified the suspect, and the suspect will appear in court on Sunday.
It is not clear whether the suspect knows the victim, although he is ignorant of his motivation or mental state.
Images show emergency vehicles and armed police lined up on one side of the memorial site. Officers blocked the scene and were searching the area.
They also said they didn’t know what the weapon was.
Many officials have been deployed to the area in the consequences, and police warned X that there were also rescuers at the scene “caring for several witnesses.”
The attack appears to have occurred on the north side of the memorial, contrary to the U.S. Embassy.
The memorial for the murdered Jews in Europe covering 19,000 square meters is described as the central Holocaust memorial in Germany.
Swedish police said hours after the attack in the German capital that they were suspected of preparing to commit a violent crime and arrested three men near the Israeli embassy.
“We cannot comment on potential motivations,” police spokesman Susanna Rinaldo told Reuters news agency.
There is no suggestion of an attack in Berlin and an arrest in Stockholm.
The stabbing was a few days before the federal elections were held in Germany.
