Kenyan Tea Exports Threatened by Diplomatic Rift with Sudan

Kenya’s tea industry faces potential setbacks after a diplomatic dispute with Sudan. After Kenya held a political meeting for Sudan’s rapid support forces, the Sudanese government recalled the ambassador, which Khartoum labeled as “hostile acts.” Sudan is the top ten importers of Kenyan tea, a key exporter. The ongoing civil war has reduced Kenyan tea exports by nearly 74%, until March 2024, when revenues dropped from $18.6 million to $5 million. Industry experts expressed concern that further diplomatic tensions could exacerbate these declines, urging alternative markets to mitigate potential economic impacts.
