Mozambique’s Gas Potential Crucial for Africa’s Economic Transformation

Ayuk highlighted key projects, market trends and policies as accelerating the energy sector and the global energy hub in Mozambique, in an interview with the African Energy: The Mozambique Roundtable last week.

“Other countries in sub-Saharan Africa do not have untapped and untapped natural gas like Mozambique. We encourage governments, the IOC and investors to ensure that every drop of hydrocarbon is produced to drive agricultural growth, enhance energy security and enhance society. He mentioned ExxonMobil’s $25 billion investment in Rovuma LNG program, Eni’s Coral SUL expansion, Coral North Project and Totalenerengies’ ongoing efforts in the multi-billion-dollar LNG project in Mozambique as a driving force for the expansion of energy in Mozambique Key projects.

“These developments, coupled with gasoline and petrochemical projects, show Mozambique’s ready to attract new investors and further integrate into the global energy market,” Ayuk said.

According to Ayuk, while renewable energy helps diversify energy mixes, the intermittent nature of wind and solar energy makes gas a more reliable energy resource for elastic base power.

He also highlighted Mozambique’s ability to produce urea and ammonia from natural gas reserves, strengthening food security and reducing Africa’s dependence on external markets such as Ukraine.

Ayuk said the energy sector could serve as a platform to enable local communities, women and youth to become active industry players, not just bystanders.

With local content developed, Ayuk praised Mozambique for its commitment to leveraging its natural gas resources to meet domestic demand. He recognizes the country’s gas power strategy and includes SMEs in the energy value chain.

He encouraged the government to simplify regulations, eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks, and introduce new licensing rounds to unlock the full potential of the market. Ayuk also stressed the importance of cooperation between Mozambique stakeholders and other African countries, positioning the mainland as a competitive and attractive investment destination.
