Huge sinkhole swallows up more of Surrey street | Global News Avenue

Surrey has a huge sewage puddle on the street that is continuing to develop and swallow more roads, and the county council declares a major event.

The initial hole first appeared on the Godstone High Street on Monday night, and by Tuesday lunch time was at least 65 feet (20m).

Now a second opening appears, a car shaking at the edge and the owner cannot move it.

Fearing about the explosion caused by exposed cables, one resident said the street now “sounds like a waterfall” and evacuated the home from home.

The evacuated property was about three years ago at a former sand quarry site.

Local residents also believe there are caves under the area.

Noosh Miri and her family are the people who police evacuated from the area.

“We knocked violently when we opened the door. When I opened it, it sounded like I was in a waterfall because the puddle was right in front of my doorstep,” she said.

“The police told us we needed to go out immediately and in 10 minutes we were dressed and grabbed the closest thing we could find.”

Now their insurance company has discovered temporary accommodation for the family, but she says she has been ready for several months before moving back.

Due to major events, the operation is now managed by the Surrey Local Resilience Forum, with the Surrey County Council (SCC) as the main body.

The SCC said investigations are still underway to ensure the area is safe and to repair utilities.

Carl Bussey, Assistant Director of the Council for Safer Community, said: “The Tandridge District Council supported by residents (about 30 properties) from the cordon, and provided relevant Accommodation advice.”

The Environmental Bureau said there is no evidence of contamination caused by holes.

On Wednesday morning, Ses Water said it had restored supplies to the property but warned that the water seemed to have discolored.

The company said there is no risk in health and customers will receive compensation in their bills.

Repairs are expected to take several months.
