Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Elected New AU Commission Chair

Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf was elected chairman of the African Union Commission. He succeeded former Chadian Prime Minister Moussa Faki, who has led the group of 55 countries since 2017. Youssouf defeated the Australian summit at former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former Madagascar Foreign Minister Richard Randrimandrato. This result disappointed Odinga, a famous Kenyan politician, and served as prime minister in 2008. Since 2005, Djibouti Foreign Minister Youssouf has been running for peace and security. He inherited many challenges, including the rise of the West African military government, a Sudanese civil war that led to the world’s largest displacement crisis and the ongoing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The African Union Commission often faces criticism for its slow response to the crisis, highlighting the key role of the new chairman.
