Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro charged over alleged coup plot

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of attempting a coup by the country’s chief prosecutor after being defeated in the 2022 presidential election.

The 69-year-old has been filed five charges on suspicion of bidding to prevent President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva from taking office after a fierce election match .

The Supreme Court will now consider the prosecutor’s recommendations. If accepted, Bolsonaro and 33 other people will be formally prosecuted and will have to face trial.

Bolsonaro denied misconduct and said he was a victim of political persecution.

He was accused of undermining Brazil’s democratic campaign for eight years, for falsely claiming that the electronic votes used in the October 2022 poll were vulnerable to hacking and fraud.

President Luiz Inácio Lulada Silva won a huge election, which is an extremely narrow advantage – more commonly found in Lula.

Bolsonaro never publicly acknowledged his failure and left Brazil two days before Lula was sworn in as president.

On January 8, 2023, his supporters attacked the government building in the capital Brasilia. Some buildings were looted and police arrested 1,500 thugs.

Three months ago, federal police released a report accusing Bolsonro of playing a leading role in planning and organizing an attempted coup – including preventing Lula from taking power by giving ideas to key figures in the military.

The document accused Bolsonaro of the acts that are harmful to the democratic order lies in the criminal organization led by Bolsonaro himself.

In fact, this means that the legal process has begun and Bolsonaro may face trial.

One of the allegations of the “armed criminal organization” led by Bolson Rowe and his vice presidential candidate Walter Braga Netto is the crime against the “armed criminal organization.”

“They are allied with others, including civilians and military personnel, trying to prevent the outcome of the 2022 presidential election in a coordinated manner,” Attorney General Paulo Gonet Branco said in a statement.

Brazilian media reported that the Supreme Court is expected to hold a trial later this year.

Responding to the prosecutor’s decision shows that over the past decade, the division that marked Brazilian politics remains as deep as ever.

Government supporters are celebrating and saying the former president is in prison, while the opposition insists that he is innocent.

The focus now is on the impact of the Supreme Court on next year’s presidential election. Recent polls show President Lula’s rejection level.

Despite being banned from running for office, Bolsenro remains a powerful political force in Brazil and can use the trial as a platform for its agenda.
