Liberian President Suspends 450 Officials in Bold Anti-corruption Move

Liberian President Joseph Boakai ordered a moratorium on more than 450 senior government officials without paying for announcing their assets as required by the national anti-corruption law. The suspension will last for one month unless the affected officials comply with the law and submit the necessary documents. Boakai, who took office last year, promised to combat corruption and ensure accountability – he said was damaged by non-compliance with asset disclosure rules. A few months after the inauguration, he made a 40% cut, which he hoped would set a precedent for responsible governance in the country. While some political analysts support Boakai’s strong stance, others argue that these suspensions are only symbolic and not enough to address the grafting in entrenched Liberia. Meanwhile, the Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) released a list of all affected officials and strengthened public scrutiny.
