Mauritius’ Ex-Prime Minister Granted Bail on Money Laundering Accusations

Former Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has been released on bail by the magistrate of Port Louis, the country’s capital. The detectives of the State-run Financial Crime Commission arrested and accused Jugnauth of money laundering after finding about $2.5 million while searching for his house. Magistrate Judge Rishan Chinese banned Jugnauth from interfering with witnesses or potential witnesses in the case. Chinaah also bans the former prime minister from sharing case details with investigators and anyone outside the court. Jugnauth must appear on Monday to finalize the bail process. In November, current Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam ordered a review of public finance and doubt the accuracy of the previous government’s data. Since then, Mauritius authorities have arrested the former central bank governor who served in Jugnauth on charges of alleged conspiracy to commit fraud. Meanwhile, the former prime minister denied the allegations raised against him.
