Over 67 million screenings – AstraZeneca’s ‘Healthy Heart Africa’ celebrates 10 years of transforming Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) care

Astrazeneca (www.astrazeneca.com) Flagship Health Equity Program – Healthy Heart Africa (HHA), marking its 10th anniversary, celebrates more than 67 million blood pressure screenings and takes a decade of action against noncommunicable diseases in Africa.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and accounts for a large proportion of non-communicable diseases (NCD) deaths worldwide. In Africa, more than 27% of adults suffer from hypertension(1)far above the global average.

The program has begun to address chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is closely related to hypertension and affects 15.8% of Africans.(2) Early detection and management are crucial because CKD often progresses quietly. HHA is designed to improve the opportunity for timely diagnosis and treatment, thereby reducing the burden of disease throughout the community.

This commemoration lays the foundation for the upcoming NCD high-level meeting held by the World Health Organization(3)strengthen the urgency of collective action. One aspect of the program’s success is built on a strong partnership with government, NGOs and community leaders to engage in culturally tailored interventions.

Helen McGuire, head of the Path Global Program, added:

It makes great sense to see the expansion and institutionalization of integrated and expanded NCD services, especially in countries like Ghana. Introducing NCD indicators into national health Information systems are a major milestone that allows better planning, resource allocation and outcome monitoring.”

The African Ministry of Health advocates that HHA integrates hypertensive care into national policies to ensure sustainability and local ownership.

“In Uganda, our partnership with Healthy Africa helps strengthen our response to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), a major health challenge across Africa. Through this collaboration, we have increased people’s risk factors Recognition, improves early detection, connects patients, and builds the capacity of healthcare workers. By integrating hypertension data into our national health systems and advancing digitalization, we are ensuring seamless patient pathways, enabling progress tracking and Provide life-saving care for our people.”

With its proven model – Healthy Heart Africa program aims to expand into new regions, integrate climate-rich healthcare solutions and prioritize early detection to prevent disease progression. Through this innovative partnership, the program is designed to provide care to those in the most need.
