South Africa’s Land Inequalities Are More Than Trump and Musk’s Narratives

U.S. President Donald Trump and his South African-born ally Elon Musk are the biggest critics of South Africa’s new expropriation bill, claiming it discriminated against white landlords. The two men’s stance ignores hundreds of years of policies that have deprived non-white South Africans of the rights and spread land inequality. In 1913, the then South African government passed a bill that limited black land ownership to only 7%, which was later modified to 13%. Now, over 100 years later, non-white South Africans own only 4% of the country’s private land, despite 81% of their population. The New Expropriation Act aims to address these historical injustices and redistribute unused land. But contrary to what Trump and Musk said, it allows the government to take over property only when fair negotiations fail without compensation.
