Only 13 of the 195 Parties to the Paris Agreement communicated their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) 3.0 by the deadline of 10 February 2025
Parties to the Paris Climate Agreement must submit the latest national climate plan or nationally determined contributions (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat every five years. The second iteration of NDCS was reviewed in COP 28’s first global stock acquisition (GST1). GST1 proves that the world is a good thing that deviates from the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree goal and has all the combined effects and has all the impact. NDC At the end of this century, we put our courses close to 3 degrees. GST1 therefore requires parties to sign the Paris Agreement to develop updated and ambitious NDC (NDC3.0) and 10-year plans and submit it to the Secretariat by 10 February 2025, including 2035 2019 goals.
However, by Monday, February 10, 2025, only 13 countries around the world reached this deadline. From Africa, only Zimbabwe submits on time. Other countries with deadlines include the Marshall Islands, Singapore, Saint Lucia, Andorao, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Uruguay, the United States, Ecuador, Brazil, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates. The Centre for Climate Policy in Africa (ACPC) congratulates Zimbabwe and is honored to support Zimbabwe in updating and communicating its NDC3.0. ACPC will continue to support other African member states in the process until COP30.
Given the urgency of climate emergencies, it is disappointing that among the 195 signatories, only 13 of the Paris Agreement have communicated their national contribution to the climate response. We also note that it is not enough for parties to communicate NDCs and that if humans have any realistic opportunity to prevent irreversible interference in the climate system, sufficient financial should be provided to achieve its implementation.
In this regard, we note that countries must submit plans by the latest September to ensure that they are included in the NDC Synthesis Report, which will be released before the COP30 in Brazil. ACPC will support African member states to update and communicate their NDC 3.0 and long-term low emission development strategies in this timeline. In addition to supporting the country to reinstall its NDC, ACPC will also participate in the assessment to ensure consistency with GST1’s recommendations and 1.5°C trajectory. ACPC and UNECA will continue to explore mechanisms and tools that can be deployed to mobilize the required finances to implement NDC.
