FA Cup to use semi-automated offsides for first time
In the fifth round of the FA Cup, semi-automated offside technology will use British domestic football for the first time.

The Football Association added: “After successful real-time operation in the Emirates Cup, the Premier League will hope to implement the system later this season”.
Premier League clubs Unanimously approved for use In April’s 2024-25 season, the planned introduction date is October 2024, although this has been postponed to allow further testing of the technology.
At the start of the 2022-2023 event, UEFA introduced semi-automated offside technology in the Champions League.
“Semi-automated off-rest technology will provide more efficient placement of virtual off-rest lines based on optical player tracking and generate virtual graphics to ensure supporters’ enhanced in vivo and broadcast experiences.”
“The operation of semi-automated offside technology does not change the accuracy of decisions, but increases the speed and efficiency of the process.”
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will also be active in all eight FA Cup rounds, including the match of champion team Preston, where the referee made a VAR announcement in the stadium.
The fifth round is scheduled for the weekend on Saturday, March 1.
