African Energy Chamber (AEC) Pays Tribute to Sam Nujoma – Namibia’s Founding Father, Energy Champion
African Energy Room (AEC) (AEC) (www.energychamber.org) pay tribute to Dr. Sam Nujoma, former President of the Republic of Namibia, and express his heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Namibia. Dr. Nujoma was not only the first democratically elected president in the country but also considered the country’s liberator and “founding father” who played a central role in fighting for Namibia’s independence. His losses mark the end of the Namibian era, but his legacy as a visionary leader and national development champion will last for generations.
Dr. Nujoma is committed to ensuring freedom in Namibia and laying the foundation for its socio-economic growth. From 1990 to 2005, he served as the leader of the Southwest African People’s Organization to the presidency, and he guided Namibia through a period of transformation that promoted stability, reconciliation and sustainable development. Under his leadership, the country implemented key policies that promoted economic self-sufficiency, industrialization and infrastructure expansion, thus ensuring Namibia’s path to maintain long-term prosperity.
One of the most important aspects of Dr. Nujoma’s leadership is his commitment to energy security and resource sovereignty. He recognized that energy plays a crucial role in economic and social development and he laid the foundation for the modern energy sector in Namibia. His government prioritizes policies that will utilize the country’s large amount of natural resources, encouraging local and international investment in oil, gas and renewable energy projects. Today, as Namibia becomes a major player in the African energy landscape, Dr. Nuyoma’s contribution remains evident in the industry’s growing dynamics and potential.
“Dr Nujoma has laid the foundation for the future of Namibia’s energy with a vision of sustainability, inclusiveness and shared prosperity. His commitment to unlocking the potential of natural resources has played a role in moving the industry forward. We have continued to build a for all The Namibian serves and positions our country as a key player on the global stage to respect his legacy.
Dr. Nujoma is an inclusive advocate who believes that energy development must be mutually beneficial to all Namibians and should drive wider socio-economic progress. His vision extends beyond national borders, highlighting the need for greater cooperation between Namibia and global partners. This approach paves the way for partnerships to not only advance the energy sector in Namibia, but also contributes to the overall energy transformation in Africa. Now, a group of foreign operators are active in Namibia. These include the total energy of France, the shell of the UK, the Chevron of the US, the Qatarenergy of the US, etc. Independent oil and gas companies such as Galp, Azule Energy, Impact Oil and Eco, Eco Atlantic, Reconafrica, etc. are also investing in Namibia to support the country’s goal of creating a sustainable domestic energy market.
“This is a dark time in Namibia, but for the oil industry, it’s more. He firmly believes that Namibia will one day become the top oil producer. The only president who joins us at the TAC meeting. A truly visionary leader. We thank him for his lifelong gift.
Dr. Nujoma has laid the foundation for positioning Namibia’s energy market today. The country is expected to become an offshore oil producer in 2029; it has become one of the most exciting deep water games in the world. Considered as a competitive and attractive market investment; and has a strategic position to provide low-carbon fuels to the southern African region. In addition to oil and gas, Dr. Nuimma recognizes the crucial role of renewable energy in strengthening energy access and promoting a just energy transition, while unlocking new export revenues from the country. Dr. Nujoma is the author of Vision 2030, a strategic roadmap for industrialization and global competitiveness in Namibia. The multisector roadmap has a strong energy component, working to address gaps in natural resource knowledge; promoting the adoption of integrated political, technical and economic measures; leveraging energy in Namibia; and accelerating diversification through investment in emerging markets. By advocating equitable resource management, he ensured that energy development in Namibia will be a catalyst for employment, innovation and industrial growth.
“Dr. Sam Nujoma is not only a leader. He is a revolutionary and he understands that true independence is based on economic and energy security. His contribution to the Namibian energy scenario creates for future generations AEC respects his legacy and remains committed to promoting his vision for the future of Namibia’s energy.” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of AEC.
As Namibia continues to make great strides in energy development, from oil and gas discovery to pioneering green hydrogen initiatives, the country will always remember Dr. Nujoma as an architect of a brighter, more prosperous future. His leadership, vision and firm commitment to Namibia’s growth will be celebrated forever.
