‘Sad time for Welsh rugby’ – reaction to Gatland’s departure
Former Welsh center Jonathan Davies told Scrum V: Warm up Welsh rugby is facing “bigger problems” and Gatland’s departure will not be the solution.
“You’ll see what we’re able to put on, it’s not good enough,” Davis said.
“I don’t know if it (separate from Gatland) will get rid of all our problems, and there are bigger issues.
“I think Warren feels the guillotine is lowered, so he decided to follow his own terms.
“It’s hard to see when it happens in the middle of six countries.
“I’m sure it’s a tough thing for him, but now it might be time to move on.”
Davies pointed to the recent struggles of Wales under 20 and said the warning sign was there, but it was not processed.
“In the past eight years, the age of under 20 is the best thing they have done is to finish fourth in the six countries in the U20s.
“Those players are now in the advanced game and if you just serve as stats, we’ll get the second half of the players.
“We need to find the right people to develop this talent.
“The problem is that the academic level, the production of talent is not going to be done in the right way, and that’s what affects us.
“This is a product we haven’t made in the past eight years at the under 20 level.”
