Two well-known Afrikaan groups – Unity and African Americans – firmly rejected President Donald Trump’s proposal that provides white refugee status and resettlement in South Africa in the United States. Instead, the leaders of these groups asserted their commitment to staying in South Africa and “building the future” there. Trump’s proposal is part of an executive order that will aid aid punished for alleged “rights violations” against white citizens. As a justification for his actions, the U.S. president claimed that the country’s new land acquisition laws were unfairly targeting Afrikaan farmers. However, the South African government denied any targeted oppression, stressing that the legislation aims to address the historical injustice of apartheid. Whites only have 70% of the country’s farmland, and critics believe that portraying Afrikaans as oppressed is misleading.
