Warren Gatland: Wales rugby union head coach to leave role

Gatland is statistically the worst team in Wales in its 144-year international rugby history, losing for the 14th straight time as they lost to Italy in Rome last weekend.

The New Zealander had previously had 12 years of success with Wales coaching, including three Grand Slams, two World Cup semi-finals and a record 14 wins, which led Wales to briefly surpass the world rankings.

Gatland left after the 2019 Rugby World Cup and then returned for the second time in charge when replacing Wayne Pivac in December 2022.

Since then, Gatland has overseen six wins and 20 losses in 26 Tests, with a win rate of just 23%. Wales also fell to its lowest position in the world rankings.

In both spells, Gatland has been in charge of 151 games, with his overall record of 76 wins, 73 losses and two draws.
