Welsh Open: Chadha knocks out defending champion Wilson in first round
India’s Ishpreet Singh Chadha eliminated defending champion Gary Wilson in the first round of the Welsh Open.
Chadha kept his nerves in the decision frame, taking over his position in the last 32 in the field Cymru of Llandudno.
Wilson admitted to “feeling uncomfortable” after the game, dropping from 2-1 to 3-2 lead, but Chadaha cleared the game in the last two frames.
“It feels great,” Chada said, “I think he (Wilson) wasn’t there since the start of the game and then went crazy when he fell down, which got me in a dilemma.
“I’m glad I’ve been able to perform well from ().
“He has been a tough player and I’m so glad to get through.”
Earlier in the first day, former Welsh Open champions Mark Williams and Mark Selby entered the second round.
Williams beat Austria’s Florian Nuessle 4-1, while Selby beat Florian 4-2, 4-2 Florian.
“It’s surprising that the best seven of my sevens are not the three that happen often,” Williams said. Williams downplayed his chances of becoming a Welsh champion since his 1999 victory.
“If I hadn’t won the game in the last 26 years, I don’t think I would win the game on the 27th,” said the three-time world champion.
“I will do my best, but we didn’t have a Wales winner before, just myself, it’s shameful, it’s how hard it is.”
