Powerful earthquake in Caribbean triggers “tsunami threat” for Cuba, Honduras and Cayman Islands, officials say
A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean on Saturday night, north of Honduras and southwestern Cayman, triggered a “tsunami threat” from officials to Cuba, Honduras and Cayman.
USGeological Survey Earthquake says It happened around 6:23 pm Eastern Time, about 129 miles southwest of George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands and the center 372 miles west of Kingston, Jamaica.
Soon after, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami consultation for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Consultations on these islands were later cancelled.
However, the “tsunami threat” continues to Cuba, Honduras and Cayman Islands.

No alert was issued in mainland America
Local authorities in the Cayman Islands and Puerto Rico warned residents to stay away from the water for the time being.

Royal Cayman Islands Police Department told CBS News there are no reports of damage to the earthquake itself.
At least 270 people have reported feeling the USGS earthquake as of 8:30 pm Eastern Time.
