Women’s FA Cup: Rugby Borough aiming for upset against WSL side Liverpool

Rugby’s FA Cup runs this season from the quarterfinals when the club’s recent history is considered.

In the 2021-22 season, the club – then known as Coventry United and competed in the championship – was placed in voluntary liquidation.

They were saved by a last-minute acquisition agreement, but a few days later, the FA deducted 10 points to violate the competition rules.

The club got rid of a miraculous last day escape from relegation that season – down only in the second year.

However, on the third floor, Coventry United reborn, the club was renamed the Rugby Borough and moved to the town of Warwickshire.

Since then, they have turned to a hybrid model with professional and semi-pro players, and Lee Burch has become the club’s head coach.

The former Millwall, Yeovil and Bees Boss believe that entering the last eight of the FA Cup will only help rugby ambitions full-time and improve their pursuit of promotions .

“It really puts us on the map – it’s the bonus for the FA Cup running,” Birch said.

“We played 1,000 tickets in the first 24 hours. They didn’t see Liverpool. They came to (see) us against Liverpool.”

However, despite its excitement, Birch said he had to ban the terms “Fa Cup” and “Liverpool” over the past two weeks as his team continued to bid for promotions.

The Cup was sandwiched against Wolves, and they hit the Wolves 1-1, with Nottingham Forest being the two teams on the top of the northern part of the North Women’s League.

“The magic of the FA Cup that people talk about – we sometimes see in men’s games where you see the smaller side pulling out one of the big guns – I’m not sure if we’ve seen it in recent history By it,” Birch said.

“So if we can do that, it would be a big story.

“We are a hardworking, honest, very talented team and the players should shine at this moment and I’m sure they will do it.”
