Manchester-Liverpool rail line closed after Salford car crash

The main railway line between Liverpool and Manchester will remain closed for most of the time after a car hits the track.

Network Rail said the crash occurred near the roundabout of Regent Road in Salford early Friday, causing “significant damage to railroads and overhead cables.”

No train was able to run on the chat moss line connecting Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly until British transport police and network railway engineers unloaded the car and repaired the damaged cables.

Greater Manchester Police Department (GMP) said a person was arrested on suspicion of driving after the crash.

Transport rail services in Wales, Transpennine Express and Northern Rail are facing significant disruption.

“When remedial work is underway, expect some delays this morning,” a GMP spokesperson said.

Network Railway said the line is expected to close “for most of the day.”

It said: “For any passengers affected by this incident, we are really sorry and urge anyone planning a train trip between Liverpool and Manchester to plan ahead and contact their train operator for the latest travel information. ”
